Tuesday, 12 December is the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our Lady appeared to St. Juan Diego on several occasions in December of 1531 requesting that a Church be built on the site of an ancient Nahuatl shrine to a mother goddess. St. Juan Diego brought the request of Our Lady to the bishop. He was turned away on several occasions until he fulfilled the bishop’s request for a sign. The sign, as St. Juan Diego thought, was the gathering of roses growing out of season. St. Juan Diego gathered these roses into his cloak to present them to the bishop. Yet the true sign was revealed when the imprint of Our Lady became visible upon his cloak when St. Juan Diego opened it to show the roses to the bishop. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Americas and the Patroness of Respect Life initiatives.
