Most Precious Blood of the Lord

  • by

The month of July is dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of the Lord. The Catechism reminds us that “the essential signs of the Eucharistic sacrament are wheat bread and grape wine, on which the blessing of the Holy Spirit is invoked and the priest pronounces the words of consecration spoken by Jesus during the Last Supper: “This is my Body which will be given up for you… this is the cup of my Blood.” CCC 1412.

The Litany of the Most Precious Blood includes the following supplications. Blood of Christ… the price of our redemption; our blessing cup; in which we are washed; torrent of mercy; strength of the martyrs; endurance of the saints; comfort of the weary; solace of the mourner; hope of the repentant; peace and refreshment; pledge of life; by which we pass to glory; most worthy of honor… Blood of Christ, be our salvation.

O God, who by the Most Precious Blood of your Only Begotten Son have redeemed the whole world, preserve in us the work of your mercy, so that, ever honoring the mystery of our salvation, we may merit to obtain its fruits, Through Christ our Lord. Amen. – United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
